Does «media naranja» (soulmate) literally mean "orange sock"? How did this term for "soulmate" develop in Spanish culture?

I don't think the word "media" is referring here to sock/stocking/ tights..., it refers to "half" (half orange) - I'm not sure about the origin of this expression in Spain and Latin America, but here's a possible theory that goes back to Ancient Greece...
